Questions and answers
Fibreglass grating, answered.
AxiGrid Industrial Supply supplies fibreglass (FRP/GRP) grating from Cape Town to all of South Africa. Here are straight answers to the questions buyers, engineers and installers ask most, about panel types, sizes, resins, fixing, solar walkways, coastal use and delivery.

The basics.
What is fibreglass grating?
Fibreglass grating is a panel of glass fibres set in resin, formed into an open grid or a solid surface. It is used like steel grating for walkways, platforms, stairs and covers, but it doesn't rust or conduct electricity.
What is the difference between FRP and GRP grating?
None. FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) and GRP (glass reinforced plastic) are two names for the same fibreglass grating.
Who supplies fibreglass grating in Cape Town?
AxiGrid Industrial Supply supplies fibreglass (FRP/GRP) grating from Cape Town, with delivery across South Africa: mini mesh, standard mesh and solid top panels in 25, 38 and 50 mm, cut to size in any RAL colour. AxiGrid is the Western Cape agent for FS Grating, the South African manufacturer.
Does AxiGrid Industrial Supply make the grating?
No. The panels are made by FS Grating (Fibreglass and Steel Grating SA) at its factory in Kempton Park. AxiGrid Industrial Supply is FS Grating's Western Cape agent: it advises and quotes, and FS Grating invoices, makes the panels and arranges delivery.
How are AxiGrid and FS Grating related?
AxiGrid Industrial Supply is the Western Cape agent for FS Grating. AxiGrid gives the advice and the quote. FS Grating sends the invoice, takes payment, makes the panels in Kempton Park and arranges delivery, unless you use your own transport.
Who handles warranty claims?
The warranty on the panels comes from the manufacturer, FS Grating. AxiGrid Industrial Supply is your point of contact for any claim, and can send you FS Grating's warranty terms.
Choosing a panel.
What sizes does fibreglass grating come in?
AxiGrid Industrial Supply supplies panels of 1220 x 2440 mm and 1220 x 3660 mm, 25, 38 or 50 mm thick, cut to size on request.
What thickness of fibreglass grating do I need?
It depends on the span and the load. 25 mm suits light foot traffic and short spans, 38 mm is the common walkway thickness, and 50 mm carries heavier loads and longer spans.
Mini mesh or standard mesh?
Use standard mesh for most walkways, platforms and drains. Use mini mesh where small items, high heels or small wheels must not fall through.
Isophthalic or vinyl ester resin?
Isophthalic polyester suits general outdoor use. Vinyl ester is the choice for chemical exposure, wastewater, and strong acids or alkalis.
Can fibreglass grating be cut and coloured?
Yes. Panels are cut to size, including CNC-cut curves and angles, and made in any RAL colour.
Uses and delivery.
Is fibreglass grating a good choice for solar panel walkways?
Yes. Fibreglass grating is non-conductive, doesn't rust, and is light to carry onto a roof, which makes it a safe walkway between solar panel rows.
Is FRP grating better than galvanised steel at the coast?
For foot traffic at the coast, usually yes: FRP grating doesn't rust, needs little maintenance and weighs less. Galvanised steel is still the choice for vehicles and very heavy loads.
How is fibreglass grating fixed down?
With clips onto its supports: Type M hold-down clips that grip two adjacent grating bars, J clamps fitted from above, or banana clamps that hook under the flange, in 304 or 316 stainless steel or galvanised steel.
Who do I pay for an AxiGrid order?
You pay FS Grating, the manufacturer. AxiGrid Industrial Supply gives you the quote; FS Grating then sends a pro forma invoice or invoice, and payment goes into FS Grating's FNB account shown on it.
Who arranges delivery?
FS Grating makes the panels at its factory in Kempton Park and can arrange delivery anywhere in South Africa on your behalf. Or you can arrange your own transport. Lead times vary from 14 days to 21 days.
Does AxiGrid Industrial Supply deliver outside Cape Town?
Yes. For orders from AxiGrid Industrial Supply, FS Grating arranges delivery anywhere in South Africa, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Or you can arrange your own transport. Lead times vary from 14 days to 21 days.
