Load tables.

How far fibreglass grating bends (deflection, in mm) under an even load spread over the panel, for each thickness and clear span between supports.

The panel size is written thickness x mesh x mesh in mm: 38 x 38 x 38 is 38 mm thick with a 38 x 38 mm mesh. The load is in kg per m², with kPa in brackets. A dash means FS Grating publishes no figure for that span and load. AxiGrid sells 25, 38 and 50 mm grating; 30 mm is on request. For example, 38 mm grating on a 600 mm span bends 1.06 mm under 500 kg/m².

Resins

ResinUse
Isophthalic polyesterStandard. General, outdoor and coastal use. The resin is SABS 713 and Lloyd's approved.
Vinyl esterChemical resistant: a premium bisphenol-A epoxy vinyl ester, with high resistance to acids, alkalis and oxidising agents. Wastewater, chemical plants.

The full chemical resistance chart is below.

Properties

  • Corrosion: resistant in coastal, marine and industrial settings
  • Electrical: non-conductive
  • UV: UV-stable
  • Fire: fire-retardant options. See the flame test below.
  • Colour: any RAL colour, through the resin
  • Surface: gritted, smooth or patterned

Chemical resistance.

The highest working temperature for moulded fibreglass grating in each chemical, by resin.

Find the chemical and its strength. Then read the highest temperature it is rated for with vinyl ester resin and with isophthalic resin. N/R means not recommended: choose the other resin, or ask us. For example, 25% sulphuric acid is rated to 82 °C with vinyl ester and to 65 °C with isophthalic.

Flame test.

FS Grating had two fibreglass laminates tested for flammability and LOI (limiting oxygen index): a red one made with Dion Impact 9133-00 resin and a green one made with NCS 991 PAMV resin. LOI is the share of oxygen in the air a material needs to keep burning. Normal air has about 21% oxygen, so a material with a high LOI stops burning on its own.

Data questions.

What load can 38 mm fibreglass grating carry?

It depends on the clear span between supports. In FS Grating's tables, 38 mm grating with a 38 x 38 mm mesh on a 600 mm span bends 1.98 mm under 1000 kg/m² and 11.6 mm under 5000 kg/m². On a 900 mm span it bends 11.23 mm under 1000 kg/m². In point load tests it held 1457.69 kg on a 300 mm span before it failed.

How much does fibreglass grating bend?

Very little on short spans. Under 500 kg/m² on a 300 mm span, FS Grating's 25, 38 and 50 mm panels all bend less than 0.3 mm. Bending grows fast with span, so choose a thicker panel or closer supports for longer spans.

Is fibreglass grating non-conductive?

Yes. Fibreglass grating doesn't conduct electricity, which is why it is used near electrical equipment, in cable trenches and on solar roofs.

Is fibreglass grating fire retardant?

Fire-retardant options are available. In FS Grating's flame test, a green laminate (NCS 991 PAMV resin) went out in 21.5 seconds, with 4.7 mm flame spread and an LOI above 83.8%. A red laminate (Dion Impact 9133-00) took 158.5 seconds, with 5.1 mm spread and an LOI above 76.2%.

Which chemicals can fibreglass grating handle?

In FS Grating's chart, moulded fibreglass grating with vinyl ester resin is rated up to 82 °C for 30% hydrochloric acid, 25% sulphuric acid, 10% sodium hydroxide, bleach and black sewage. Isophthalic resin is not recommended for sodium hydroxide, nitric acid, bleach or black sewage. Chloroform is not recommended with either resin. The full chart is on this page.
